Target 4 Today is a community driven project initially for the Targetware game engine but now being implemented within the open source Simulab sim engine.
The goal is to create a FREE TO PLAY realistic bomber simulation that features online multi-crewing of the following positions: piloting, navigating, bomb-aiming, flight engineering, turret gunning and radio operating.
For the simulab engine we've decided to build a USAAF daylight bombing mission and as such the B17 and B24 will be our first planes built and introduced. We'll follow this by importing our existing fleet of Bomber Command and Luftwaffe bombers.
The terrain used covers the European Theatre of Operations (ETO) from the British airfields to the German capital, Berlin.
T4T members feel that the commercial game/simulation design houses have abandoned the WWII combat flight sim genre believing it to be not financially viable. We believe they never really did a good job in the first place being more interested in the cash and once that'd dried up lost interest and moved onto the next project.
We believe WE can do it better !
We have a long term view of T4T development, it's our belief that only we can expend the time and effort to do it right..It's not about the glorification of war and so we don't treat it as a game but as a simulation. If we capture just 1% of the emotions that these guys went through then we'll have done them proud..... and they won't be forgotten.
We give our time freely to achieve this goal and are always on the lookout for interested individuals with the desire to do the same.
Although the glamour side of contributing is seen as the 3D or 2D it's not the 'be all and end all' that needs to be done to have a fully rounded sim. So we need people interested in any or all of these:
3D, 2D, JSBSim flight modeling, animation, particle effects, research, documentation, web site content, ground targets, and generally just thinking of new ways of doing things...we turn no one away.
No one will hold you to any deadlines, and any contributions are always gratefully received. If you feel you have any of the skills needed please do not hesitate to jump in on the forum and say hello.
There is unfortunately no financial gain, and other than granting Target 4 Today non-exclusive rights to use your work, anything you produce remains your property and can be used for any other purpose you desire.
