On 17 August 1942, the Eighth mounted its first independent mission, when General Eaker led twelve B17's to attack the marshalling yards at Sotteville-les-Rouen, on the Seine west of Paris. Flying as co-pilot in the lead aircraft was Major Paul Tibbets, who three years later almost to the day, was to drop the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
